Siegel+Gale Survey Finds Complexity Played Major Role in Current Financial Crisis
Findings from global strategic branding firm Siegel+Gale's recent Simplicity Survey, conducted between December 29 and January 5, 2009 among 1,214 homeowners and investors, indicate that consumers have become highly critical and untrusting of banks, mortgage companies and Wall Street, and feel that complexity and confusion have been a major cause of the financial meltdown. More than one-third of all surveyed are less likely to trust financial institutions, compared to a year ago. Three-quarters of all consumers think complexity and confusion have played a major role in the financial crisis. And almost two-thirds believe that financial institutions intentionally make things complicated to hide risks and keep people in the dark.

Ensuring Certainty in an Uncertain World
The global IT services market has radically transformed with the rise of Indian outsourcing giants, including Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a member of the industrial conglomerate, Tata Group. Founded in 1968, TCS has evolved into Asia's largest IT firm with yearly revenue in excess of $5.0 billion and almost 150,000 employees across more than 50 countries.
However, in the minds of IT buyers in the U.S. and Europe, there was a general lack of awareness, little differentiation, and a perception of increased risk in doing business with an India-based firm.

The stimulus America needs: trust
Alan Siegel, Founder, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer
Public trust in businesses is rock bottom. Simplicity will win it back. In an effort to rebuild decades worth of lost trust, President Obama has called for transparency and openness in government. And a good thing too, as the intensity of consumer distrust is at the highest Iíve seen it in the past 30 years.
A survey of 1,200 adults we conducted earlier this year reveals that trust in banks, mortgage lenders, and brokers has plunged nearly 40 percent in one year. Moreover, 63 percent of those surveyed feel that these businesses flagrantly make things more complicated in order to hide real risks. So how can businesses rebuild trust amid today's global economy, deceptive propositions, double talk, and disclaimers?
They need to incorporate clarity and simplicity into their programs and communications. Corporations need to do more than improve governance and raise capital. They have to speak plainly to their constituencies. It is time to come out from behind unintelligible language. To read the full story, click here.
